Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, New York

Jorge Morel has a technical facility that makes it possible for him to play anything in a repertory that leads toward the lighter side of music. The combination makes the Argentinean guitarist a popular recitalist and deservedly so. He is a sophisticated artist when dealing with arrangements of folk and musical comedy melodies and one does not have to condescend to enjoy his taste and skill. He can, of course, play smoothly the classic items and the repertory as he demonstrated Thursday night in his program in Alice Tully Hall. Giuliani's Variations On A Theme by Handel" and Torroba's "Sonatina" were cases in point. But it was when he turned to his own "Suite Del Sur" that he was in his element. The color effects, the avoidance of anything garish, made his playing singularly appealing. In his arrangement of the dances from West Side STory and of an Argentine sing played as an encore and "In Crespos' Mortena" and Escobar's "Chopi", Mr Morel gave further evidence of the kind of spell he can cast over his listeners.
